Cross docking refers to a solution which allows goods to be received in and placed directly onto outbound transports without having to spend time in storage in between. Cross docking speeds up the shipping process by eliminating the time required to catalog and warehouse items, and then retrieve them again to be shipped out. The items simply come off one transport and placed onto their new transports, each heading to their own separate locations. Cross docking is an ideal solution for companies that have multiple outlets or assembly plants. All their vendor shipments can be delivered to one location and then cross docked to transports delivering to those multiple locations. Eliminating the warehousing component not only saves time and money, it also reduces the opportunity for error and misplacement of materials.
